10 Reasons Why you Need a Dietitian

As human beings we are hardwired to overeat, a phenomenon which is called ‘Mindless Eating’. And mindless eating is precisely why a lot of us put on weight and at the same time take in lesser and lesser nutrition. We are all guilty of consuming a lot more calories than what our ancestors did which is the reason why obesity and diabetes is so rampant in India today. We have allowed ourselves to produce and also consume food without any self restraint.Think about it – all your life you’ve never been given any instructions or any training about eating right.

When you consult a Dietitian, you are making the first step towards educating yourself about the fuel that drives you and your career. The Dietitian gives you a guide to eating in the 21st century. The Dietitian arms you with the all the information that you need to become a smart eater. You are then no more a slave to food but instead you learn to harness the power of food. A Dietitian does not take you off foods but helps you learn to eat what you want but in a smarter, leaner and healthier way. I also help my clients learn to enjoy their food and enjoy it without spending too much money! And of course, a Dietician helps you plan foods that are right for you – so you end up losing weight and looking good!

Let look at some more reasons why A visit to a Dietitian can overhaul your life:

1. You Will Lose Weight

A lot of people come to me after they have been forced on ‘diets’ until they are almost starving. The result is that they end up losing not just fat but also valuable muscle along with it. You cannot afford to lose muscle because it helps you burn off fat, gives you protection from injury and gives your body that lean and attractive shape. Muscle also keeps your metabolism rate high. When you lose muscle by going on “yo-yo diets”, you tend to gain back weight more easily. This is exactly why I don’t teach my clients to eat less – I teach them to eat better!

2. You Will Enjoy Your Food

With my clients, I establish easy rules for eating. I work around a person’s food preferences whether they be vegetarian or non-vegetarian and find out what their likes and dislikes are and then suggest foods that will make them rediscover the joys of eating instead of constantly feeling guilty about what you eat every single day!

3. You Will Eat More But Also Lose Weight

In order to weigh less, you need to actually eat in regular intervals. If you have been in the habit of skipping meals, your body responds by slowing down your metabolism in order to hold on to the energy stores. As your starve yourself even more, your body begins to burn muscle tissue which in turn reduces your metabolic rate even more. I help my clients learn to snack in a smarter way and keep their metabolism levels high. Rather than fight your food urges, a dietician will advise you to find healthier ways to satisfy them.

4. You will Lose More Fat

Contrary to what most people believe, you have to eat fat in order to lose fat. A Dietician will show you how to exchange just a few hundred calories of carbs with a replacement of fat – like say by using butter instead of jam on toast or drinking low fat milk instead of a sports drink after you finish your workout. This way you stay fuller and gain lesser pounds.

5. You will Keep your Brain Young

A Dietitian will tell you that eating certain foods will keep your brain young and active. People over the age of 65 experience a slower rate of cognitive decline when they consume more than two servings of veggies per day. Green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach contain high levels of folate and are rich in Vitamin E and can be a very effective mental medicine and anti-ageing booster. This is information that can keep you at the top of your game for years to come.

6. You’ll Sleep Well

A Dietician will inform you that if you don’t sleep all that well, there are foods that can trigger the neurochemicals that create a soporific effect i.e. induce sleepiness. These foods will also ensure that you wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

7. You’ll Be More Productive

Most people have a large cup of coffee or a double shot of Espresso if they want to stay sharp and alert for an afternoon meeting. But a Dietician will give you a list of foods to have that can improve your energy levels and your sharpness without the need for ingesting caffeine or other addictive substances. To increase productivity I always suggest a diet rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins like magnesium, iron and B vitamins. These will help a person battle tiredness and feel alert and active. Foods like turmeric can make a huge difference in improving brain cell function. When you consult your dietician, she will give you a list of more foods with brain and energy-boosting effects.

8. You will Avoid Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is increasing at an alarming pace among people worldwide. Preventing Diabetes and all it’s accompanying complications can be avoided by eating the right foods. For example, the calcium found in dairy products can reduce your risk of metabolic syndrome which usually precedes Diabetes. As a Diabetes Educator, I always advise my clients that they must include atleast 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week and they must limit their fat intake and eat as much fruits, vegetables and fibre-rich foods as possible. Your Dietician will be able to give you a better understanding of all the recommendations made here.

9. You will Look Younger

Research has proven that those who eat the most leafy green vegetables and beans have the fewest wrinkles. Spinach and beans are two foods that contain compounds that can prevent as well as repair damaged skin cells as you get older. As mentioned, visit your dietician. She / he will inform you about what has been missing from your diet.

10. You will be Still Kicking Butt in 2050!

We all know that just like your body, your brain also ages and gets older depending on the nourishment received and the amount of activity that it does. A dietician will inform you of important facts such as the fact that 35% of your brain is made up of pure fatty acids and you tend to lose fat from your brain if you are overweight. Eating the right kind of fats will ensure that your brain stays in tip top shape.

As you can see, it is important to visit a Dietitian because we haven’t even scratched the surface of the nutritional information that you and your body needs. A Dietician will give you important tips and guidelines that save you from putting on kilos of weight (have slim milk instead of whole milk and cut down on 32,000 calories every year!) and at the same time help you maximize your nutritional intake (choose a red bell pepper instead of a green one and get ten times more Vitamin A!). Come and visit me and I will ensure that your life here onwards is healthier than ever!
